Welcome to the Atlanta Area Chapter website!

The Atlanta Area Chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association was chartered in 1978.

The purpose of the Atlanta Area Chapter of AOSA is the following:

  • To promote and encourage the philosophy of Carl Orff and to support its implementation.
  • To distribute information relevant to the activities and growth of Orff-Schulwerk.

We Believe…

  • Music is a living force vital to the education of every child.
  • The opportunity to create speech, movement, and music in an ordered framework should be made available to all children.
  • It is important to develop trained teachers and to inform parents and communities of this educational philosophy.

Memphis City Schools Considering Doing Away with Orff Programs

The Shelby County - Memphis City School Board is considering doing away with the Nationally-Recognized Memphis City Orff music programs that have been the basis for many of the early Orff publications by teachers in their district. This is also a district that gave us many of the ideas for early training in the Orff process.

There is a petition concerning this that is seeking signatures and comments. Click here to go to the petition. If you have the time and can add your support, it will be appreciated by the Memphis Orff music teachers.

President’s Message(Summer 2010) Judy Beale

Greetings! I hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing summer and are busy getting ready to start the 2010 – 2011 school year. I’ve been teaching for the past 38 years and still find it exciting as we approach a new school year, to look forward to opportunities for new beginnings and new ideas. Discovering AOSA has opened a world of opportunities!

On behalf of the Atlanta Orff-Schulwerk Chapter, I would like to personally invite you to attend our excellent workshops this year. We are privileged to have some of the finest clinicians coming to our Atlanta Chapter to share their expertise through the Orff-Schulwerk process. These master teachers are Kathleen Turner, Andrea and Joey Coleman, Jim Solomon, and AOSA’s President - Dr. Julie Scott. And don’t forget our wonderful Teacher Share Session in March featuring many of our own chapter members. You won’t want to miss any of these workshops as they help us develop new ideas while making music together.

Many of our Chapter members attended the AOSA National Conference last November in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I would encourage you to make plans now to attend this year’s conference November 3-6 in Spokane, Washington. The theme is "Rhythms of the River ~ Flowing from the Source". It is definitely a wonderful source for professional development. I guarantee that once you attend a National Conference you will not want to miss going every year! We are proud to announce that our own Past Presidents-Tiffany English and Karen Sperber Cornell have been accepted to present two sessions at the Conference. Their sessions, entitled "Spiraling the Schulwerk" are numbers 105 and 223. Congratulations, Tiffany and Karen! Be sure to visit www.aosa.org to register online.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our Atlanta Chapter Board Members for all their dedication and leadership for our Chapter. New to our Board are the following folks: Mary Ellen Doughty (Vice Treasurer/Membership), Jody Holland (Co-Hospitality), Melvin Jordan (Facilities Liaison), Linda Agnello, Jenny Chambless and Kathleen Landolt (Honor Orff Co-Chairs).

I would also like to thank Tiffany English, (Past President, however, she still represents us as Region IV Representative for the National AOSA), Ashley Chatham, (Vice Treasurer), Cindy Clark, (Vice Membership) and Claudia Tschupp, (Facilities Liaison) for your service to our Chapter as you leave the Board. We appreciate your time and dedication in helping our Chapter’s success.

We have so many exciting things in store for us this year, including the Bi-Annual Honor Orff Concert. You will be hearing more about that later. I am honored to serve as your President for the next two years as we grow together through the gift of music. Please feel free to contact me if you have ideas or concerns to continue helping our Chapter to grow and to be one of the best in the country. Thank you for your participation and for all you do to promote Orff-Schulwerk!

See you September 18th!

Judy Beale, Atlanta Area Chapter President

Past President’s Farewell Karen Cornell

Thank you for allowing me to serve as the Atlanta Area Orff Chapter President for the past two years. I was truly honored to represent every one of you and contribute to the growth of our chapter. I was very fortunate to be surrounded by an incredible group of board members who worked very hard to make our chapter the BEST in the country!! Thank you to all of the board members who give so much of their time to our chapter.

I would like to challenge the entire chapter to find a way to contribute this year (join National AOSA, volunteer to help set up before workshops, participate in the Honor Orff Ensemble, attend the National Professional Development Conference, bring a friend to a workshop, help with Hospitality, enter the banner contest, etc.). There are so many ways to contribute. You are guaranteed to be surrounded by talented educators who believe in the difference Orff-Schulwerk makes in children’s lives.

I am very excited to pass the torch to Judy Beale. She has a wealth of knowledge in teaching and leadership. Our chapter is sure to continue to thrive under her leadership! Judy is a very passionate and creative educator who is willing to share her expertise. She has planned an amazing workshop series this year so mark your calendars! You will not want to miss a single workshop! Congratulations, Judy! You will be a fantastic President!

(Nov '09)

President’s Message - Summer 2009

Greetings! I hope you had a relaxing summer and are ready for a new school year! We had a very exciting 2008-2009! The Atlanta Area Orff Ensemble performed at National Conference in November, Tiffany English, our past president, was elected as the Region IV Representative for AOSA and we had incredible clinicians present fabulous workshops last year!

On behalf of the Atlanta Orff Chapter, I would like to personally invite you to our workshops this year. We have master teachers coming to Atlanta to share their knowledge with us. These educators include: Deanna Stark, Jos Wuytack, Dena Byers, and Rhonda Tucker. All of these clinicians will have us singing, dancing, smiling, and making beautiful music together! You won’t want to miss a single workshop!

We had many of our chapter members attend the National Conference in Charlotte last year. This year the National Conference will be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. You are all invited north to experience “Great Lakes, Great Traditions.” Grab a friend and make a road trip out of it! We all know that once you attend one National Conference, you will go every year! There are many extraordinary clinicians this year and you will not be disappointed. Visit www.aosa.org and register online!!

Lastly, I would like to thank Rebekah Roberts, Vicky Knowles, and Karen Leamon for your service on the Atlanta Area Orff Chapter Board! Thank you for all your time and dedication to the Atlanta Chapter. Rebekah has served on the board for more years than I can count. If you aren’t sure who Rebekah was, she was the smiling face that greeted you by name when you walked in the door for a workshop! She guided the chapter financially for many years and helped us grow into one of the most affluent chapters in the county. Vicky and Karen were co-chairs of the Atlanta Area Orff Ensemble the past two years. They accepted the challenge of organizing a group of students and teachers from many different counties to perform at National Conference. That was not an easy task and we appreciate your time!

We have many great things in store for us this year. From professional growth opportunities to presenting “Introduction to Orff” workshops at colleges and universities around the state, the Atlanta Chapter is growing and I am honored to serve as your president this year! Happy 30th Anniversary! (Jan '09)

The Atlanta Area Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association celebrated its 30th anniversary in March with a wonderful day of memories and presentations by the chapter's Past Presidents.  The day began with a processional (ala the banner roll call at the national conference) honoring the past presidents of the chapter.  Each of these ladies was vital in the growth of the Atlanta chapter and has made the group as strong and vibrant as it is today.  After participating in many wonderful lessons and activities, the chapter celebrated with birthday cake, birthday hats, and a congratulatory video from the AOSA Board of Trustees.  It was a special day for reminiscing, catching up with friends, and celebrating all that the Atlanta Area chapter has accomplished over the past 30 years. –Tiffany English
